A Deal Hiding in Plain Sight!
Imagine the best of both worlds – a wonderful mix of laid-back rural living while just being mere minutes away from city amenities – and you have to look no further than Lapel! It is a quintessential small Midwest town with a character all its own. With its good schools, an engaged community and easy access to major roads, Lapel is attracting homebuyers who see great value in the town. Kevin Majeski’s expertise & knowledge of this niche area can certainly give you an edge in your search for that ideal home & neighborhood!
Lapel is 9 miles east of Noblesville and 10 miles west of Anderson. It is also just 40 minutes away from Indianapolis. It’s a sliver of land (where the name Lapel is attributed to) with a population just below 2,500 based on the 2020 census. It’s a quiet residential neighborhood with easy access to two major roads (US 32 and I-69) making it convenient to travel for commuting, work or leisure.
EDUCATION
Good schools are a major factor for homebuyers who are raising families, and Lapel delivers in spades. Its schools are under the Frankton-Lapel Community School system and for a small town its size, all schools (elementary, middle and high schools) are local. The elementary and middle schools are adjacent to each other off of Route 13/Pendleton Road while the high school off of Route 32 is just 2.5 miles away. Lapel Elementary & Middle schools consistently rate high based on test scores, academic progress and parent-teacher relations. Lapel High Schools stands out for outperforming state and district averages on standardized tests. Parents will be pleased to know that schoolteachers are active in developing projects designed not only to benefit directly its students but also towards community outreach programs.
High School students appreciate that the school population is small enough that they get to interact with most, but that it’s large enough that they can be competitive against larger schools in athletics. After all, Lapel’s Bulldogs have had early success in state basketball & football competitions and that tradition of excellence & avid student participation continue to show in its expanded athletic programs that now include soccer, tennis, volleyball, golf, softball & many more.
PARKS AND RECREATION
Scattered throughout the town are multi-use outdoor parks that offer something for everyone. Brookside Park‘s main draw are its 4 baseball fields, basketball courts, playground for the kids, concession stands and walking trails. Woodward Park near the high school grounds has a basketball court, playgrounds, gazebos and a splash pad – a bonus for those hot summer days! It has walking trails and its expansive lawns make for good picnic grounds. Memorial is a smaller park on Main Street and is a destination for families and children.
COMMUNITY EVENTS and RESOURCES
Lapel has its local library which is a branch of the Anderson Public Library system and whose directive is to “Inform. Connect. Engage. Empower.” Lapel is certainly taking its cue from its Anderson counterpart by not only a book-lending outpost but also as a wi-fi spot for connectivity alongside its offering of computers & digital resources. It is also becoming a community center for adults, kids and teens through its special arts & crafts events, book clubs and the like.
The annual Lapel Village Fair attracts thousands of visitors each year with its lively atmosphere of good food, great entertainment, live music, car show, hot air balloons and a parade down Main Street. The town also throws a party for the 4th of July and Lapel’s Christmas light displays are always a welcome sight.
While Lapel is certainly small, its community engagement is extra-large: make sure you bookmark Live in Lapel for local news & events – whether that’s for a tenderloin pop-up (from the famous Swayzee Indiana growers!) to the Lapel Bulldogs hosting a volleyball charity game or simply an announcement for town bingo – Lapel continues to be a close-knit community reaching out to both its old-time residents and newcomers.
RESTAURANTS & LOCAL INTERESTS
Along Main Street you can find Lapel’s local favorites that have gained a following from nearby towns as well. There’s Smoky’s Concession Stand which serves mainly bar food while being a family-friendly establishment. Everyone seems to have a pick and the frontrunners seem to be Reuben sandwich made with their in-house corned beef, wings (bird arms), Lapel Tenderloin Sandwich and pulled pork! Just further up on Main Street, is Lapel’s own local craft brewery Pax Verum Brewing that’s been drawing fans near & wide with their artisanal beers. While their specialty is beers they also serve wines and local ciders. Fridays feature live music nights while Saturdays are food truck nights.
For a good cup of joe, tea, smoothie, seasonal drinks – head out to Gathering Grounds Coffee. For some surprise treats, Ultimate Eats sell baked goods (fans can’t get enough of their sugar-free but flavor-loaded pastries!), sandwiches as well as hot & cold drinks.
It’s a hat tip to Lapel’s beautiful surroundings and central setting that this small town has a thriving events & hosting business: The Lodge on Main provides a great venue for weddings, bridal & baby showers, graduations and so much more. The building built in 1899 was originally home to the Indiana Free Masons of Lapel and since 2020, the Evelo family purchased it with the vision of creating an event and community Center. The Red Barn Lapel is a similar passion project of two sisters who had happy memories of their family barn where their grandparents would sell antiques and rare junk from. Fast forward to 2019 and they have beautifully transformed the space for weddings, graduations – even a car show!
ADVANTAGES
Lapel doesn’t shy away from its rustic charm and increasingly is leaning on that character while being open to transformation and innovation by both its town and residents. It is certainly attracting many homebuyers who are in the know. Its proximity to major highways and to Downtown Indy makes the commute easy whether that’s for work or leisure. Access to amenities without sacrificing quality of life nor carrying a hefty city price tag is definitely a win!
