Beautiful Things Come in Small Packages!

Pendleton is 35 miles northeast of Indianapolis and is a quintessential Midwest small town with historic charm as the town’s website banner & welcome video shows.  But it’s far from a sleepy small town – its vibrant & active community, together with the town’s strong grasp of and vision for the future is making it a dynamic place to live, work and play. Perhaps its saying “The Town is Small. The Thinking is Not” – encapsulates it best!

Pendleton’s rich historical past, its natural parks and preserves have been a winning combination that’s drawing visitors and engaging its residents alike. Take advantage of Kevin Majeski’s local knowledge and insight so you can see for yourself what the buzz is all about!

EDUCATION

Pendleton’s schools are under the umbrella of the South Madison Community Schools Corporation. Families with school-age children will be pleased to know that its 3 elementary schools, middle, intermediate and high schools are all within the vicinity of each other, with the majority towards the east side of the town. Pendleton Elementary and Pendleton Heights High School have consistently earned high marks. With SMCSC’s focus not only on academic excellence but also on character development and growth, it continues to work outside the school district thru community engagement and collaboration to benefit its students and the community alike.

PARKS AND RECREATION

Central to the town’s attraction is Falls Park sitting on 284 acres of nature. The park’s scenic falls and natural pools provide a great setting for everyone to enjoy its waters especially during the summer season. Since the Park’s establishment in 1920, its amenities have expanded to include a playground, swimming pool, sports complex, golf course, dog park, hiking & walking trails, fishing spots and so much more. Its location naturally lends itself to hosting festivals, fairs and markets.  It is befitting that the Falls – the community’s original source of water & power and the catalyst for the town’s creation in the early 1800’s – continues to be a focal point in Pendleton’s transformation into the modern age. In fact while you’re in Falls Park, step into the Pendleton Historical Museum and gain more insight into the rich heritage of the town and its place at a special time in American history.

Just across the park is Falls Perk Coffee House, the perfect spot to recharge! Enjoy your food & drinks in the shop’s inviting space, run by a young entrepreneur mom and her team of baristas.

Needing an outdoor escape without having to log miles on your car? Check out Mystic Waters Compound and enjoy their rustic cabins and RVs for rent. It also offers tent camping sites where guests can enjoy outdoor activities on the water like swimming, kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding; or on land with volleyball & other sports as well as yoga.

COMMUNITY EVENTS, ARTS and CULTURE

For a small town, Pendleton has an impressive public library! Beyond its traditional services of book-lending (which has also expanded into digital form), it has positioned itself as a community center for adults, teens and kids alike. With special events like arts & craft, storytelling, video game contests, painting, yoga, weaving, dance nights, book clubs and many more, it has captured the town’s patronage & loyalty!

For the artistically-inclined or someone who simply appreciates art, duck into the Pendleton Artist’s Society/Gallery 119  whose mission is “Bringing Art to the Community”. It hosts classes and runs juried shows for photography and 2D/3D artworks featuring local artists.

Nothing brings together a community more than a farmer’s market! Pendleton brings opportunities to its local and regional growers & craftsmen as well as providing a vibrant place for the community to gather. Vendors are mostly local farmers and artisans with their small batch production, be sure to check them out while their offerings last!

Pendleton throws a party every 4th of July at the sports complex with food trucks, live music and of course, fireworks! In September it hosts the Fall Creek Heritage Fair to showcase the rich history of Pendleton. Over a hundred vendors, artisans and craftsmen join to put on an impressive fair for adults and children alike.

Year-round, something fun or informative is always happening around town like – the PHHS  homecoming parade, Concert in the Park, Kiwanis Car Show, Fridays in the Alley, the Lion’s Club fishing derby, Garden Club Plant sale, Sunday Funday, the ‘Boo Bash’ for a Halloween Trunk or Treat (with food trucks, music, games & prizes) – be sure to bookmark the town’s calendar!

LOCAL INTERESTS & RESTAURANTS

It is no surprise that Pendleton’s picturesque main street is part of the Pendleton Historic District which includes the 19th-century business district, Falls Creek Park, the Grey Goose Inn and homes in the Federal, Greek Revival and American Craftsmen styles – all listed on the National Register of Historic Places. While Pendleton is surrounded by markers of history, its energy and vision are clearly pointed forward.

There’s something for everyone in Pendleton’s culinary & entertainment scene:  The Bank Restaurant as the name implies is a converted bank and offers American cuisine, along with their signature drinks & mixes. Across is Catello’s, a favorite Italian restaurant run by its namesake chef from Napoli.  Next to it is The Stable, more than just a bar & grill, it’s become the local destination for live music as well. For brunch, try Invited to the Table and prepare to be surprised by their inspired dishes. For a hearty, family-style restaurant head out to Anita’s Diner and bring a big appetite – you’ll need it to match their generous servings. If you’re in the mood for some really good BBQ in a nice patio setting, Sahm’s Smokehouse is your only destination. The town has smaller niche spots like Ohanalulu for a taste of Hawaiian welcome through its delicious donuts, coffee & ice cream, or Sophie’s Bagels with its savory  sandwiches and variety of drinks (so many bubble tea flavors!) to cater to your cravings.

ADVANTAGES

Pendleton, with its small town charm and many amenities, offers a quality of life that is hard to put a price on. It’s a serene enclave that is less than an hour away from downtown Indianapolis.
